They are very dangerous. The one story that seems to hold truth is that they do kidnap human children. Though most of those children don't survive since the Faeries don't know how to care for them.
In my world, fairies and other spirits are believed to share powerful magic from the planet's lifeforce and whisper secrets at night to children who are considered worthy.
The criteria depends on who is telling the story but generally it's someone with a kind nature who cared for the planet and so could be trusted with its secrets to use them for good.
But I was never entrusted with those secrets, unfortunately.
