I have gone by Hinata in the past, when I was spending some time in Japan. But really, I've gone by a lot of names... So many at this point, it's hard to keep track!

Do people use these faces a lot?

It depends on where you are, and when. In your time, no. But in the later 80's, going on into the 90's, 00's, and beyond... They become a lot more popular!

They're fun! In later years, they even evolve from using punctuation marks and letters into actual little pictures! But I don't think these magicomms can handle those.

Yup! Like little faces or a thumbs up or a peace sign. There are even pictures for objects, animals, food, weather... All sorts of things! They call them emoji. Like emotion + kanji.
