[It's only because in his world the Fae typically don't use technology like this that he dares to show his face so openly. But honestly, Riley feels that the people here are more likely to be able to answer a question he has.]

Hi there.

[He offers a little smile and a wave.]

I guess you could say I'm a new guy here. But I have a bit of a weird question if anyone thinks they can answer it.

[He pushes his fingers through his blond waves before continuing.]

Do you think any of this could be Fae trickery?

[There's a laugh and he waves his hand like he's dismissing his own question.]

Okay, okay. Weirdness aside, what food would you guys recommend me trying? I figured I'd go get something to eat before finding a place to stay.

Cultivators? What are those?

Uh.. oh.. I guess your world doesn't have those. It's what I am. Cultivators are trained to help fight evil in the world like demons, monsters, and ghosts. We also help the dead find peace and cleanse spaces of resentful energy. While you're here, you can rest assured I and the other cultivators here will be willing to assist you.

[Is he allowed to volunteer his elders like this? He doesn't know.]

Wow. I don't know if there's anything like that in my world but I kind of hope so. You guys sound really cool. And helpful.

[He gives him a smile.]

What's your world like?

Well it's more modern than this. Though I guess more advanced is more accurate? But apparently it has magic in it too. Something I learned about nine years ago when I first accidentally did something...

[Ah, maybe he should mention...]

I'm Fae, by the way. Something called a Changeling. They thought I was going to die so they left me with humans and took their child. But then my parents got me well again and now the Fae think they can just come back and lay claim over me.

[His gege has mentioned his world being more 'advanced' too, but he still has no idea how that could be.

His eyes widen in surprise at the last part.]

That's so mean! Are they planning on returning the child they stole? How did your human parents not notice there was a different child with them? Did they have so many children they couldn't tell?

No. They want to have me and the child they took all those years ago. But my parents didn't notice because I look just like the child taken due to Fae magic. So there wouldn't really be a way for them to tell the difference when we were switched at infancy.

[Jingyi doesn't have words to convey how horrified he is by Riley's whole situation. It's super creepy that someone could take someone else's child and replace it without the parents being able to tell. It is messed up that the replacement child would somehow look just like the original baby. It's also super unfair for Riley to now be hunted for something he had no control over.]

Those other Fae people shouldn't get away with that! There's no way I'm letting them get to you here! Where are you?

Uhhhh...standing in line for food?

[He turns his camera around to show he's at a skewer place.]

[Uh.. well.. that doesn't look like Riley is feeling like the Fae attacking is very imminent. Was he not scared now that he was here? Jingyi stares for a few moments in silence as he tries to figure out what the honorable thing to do here is.]

If you need anything or get scared, either come to the Unclean Realm where I live or call me. I'll send you the address.

Unclean Realm? Is there a reason it's called that?

[He gives a small pause then a smile.]

You want something? I could order a skewer for you too.

[He frowns a little as he thinks of how to phrase this. Granted, he's coming at this explanation from a Lan clan member's perspective and one who may have possibly dozed a few times in history class.]

It's like 'mortal' vs the clean realm, which would be pure and of the gods. The Nie clan, who own the Unclean Realm, also originated as butchers and their use of spirits in their sabers.

[There's definitely a hint of 'butchers' and 'sabers' being considered less than ideal in his tone.]

Uh.. yeah, thanks. I can show you where the ice cream merchant is too.

[He'll just.. you know.. use this as an excuse to show up and make sure Riley really is okay. This has absolutely nothing to do with how good those skewers are. Nope.]

Huh. I don't think I get but I'm sure it means a lot to the Nie clan at least.

[Which is all that matters really right?]

Oh thanks! I'd like that. I'll stay here after I get them so you can find me easy.

[Yeah, the Nie clan can worry about why they named their realm that instead of the rest of them. He prefers the much more elegant names of Cloud Recesses, anyway.]

I won't be long!

[Hopping on his sword, it doesn't take him long before he's sailing over to the skewer vendor. Just out of precaution, he makes one wide circle though around the area just to be sure he doesn't sense anything amiss.

When he's satisfied, he jumps down and sheaths his sword before hurrying the rest of the distance over to where his new friend is.]

Riley?

[As promised, he's there nearby so he can easily be found with a bag filled with several kinds of skewers. He's looking around for Jingyi when he sees him coming toward him. With a sword? That's pretty cool. He gives him a wave.]

Yeah. I wasn't sure what kind you wanted so I ended up getting a few different ones to try out.

[He holds the bag toward his new friend so he can grab one.]

There's enough for both of us. Well, maybe more for you. I don't eat much.

[Riley honestly looks like a stiff breeze could blow him way actually.]

[Jingyi grins when he's recognized and food is offered. He snags one of the skewers at random.]

Thank you! Since you're new I really should be treating you though.

[At the comment about how much he eats, he frowns and really looks at Riley. He suddenly feels guilty taking food from someone who clearly needs it more than he does.]

You should! You're way too skinny!

You're helping me out. So it's me repaying you for it.

[Then he laughs as he looks down at himself.]

You sound like my mom. That's the kind of stuff she says to me all the time then drops more food on my plate.

It hasn't helped?

[He wonders if there's something wrong with Riley if his mother encouraged him to eat and he still is this thin. It was worrisome!]

I know some skilled healer who could help. I remember one of my clanmates had worms once and got really skinny too.

[He makes a face.]

[Riley chokes on his food then bursts out laughing.]

Worms is a new one! Usually I get asked if I have other things. But no, I just don't gain weight because I'm Fae. We're delicate creatures or something like that.

[Jingyi gives a sheepish look.]

Oh, I see. Is that how you can identify a Fae? Someone healthy but slight in build?

[He tentatively takes a bite of his skewer, relieved he's not harming his new friend in some way.

Besides, of course, being somewhat tactless about his weight.]

One of them. There's different kinds but most often they'll be very slight like me.

[Riley shrugs some.]

Most of what I've learned is from books. I'm still figuring out how much of it is real but I have noticed that one is a good indicator.

Huh.. well I've never met one before, I don't think. I'm glad the first one I met is you!

[He glances around as though trying to spy other suspiciously skinny people.]

You seemed worried about running into other ones but you're really relaxed about it now. Are you needing protection?

So far there's only one Fae here that I know of and he's not a fan of them either. He's already said he won't reveal me to them if they show up. Besides that I've had lots of people say they'll have my back.

[He picks a piece of meat off the stick with his fingers before putting it in his mouth.]

So I actually feel safer right now than I have in the past six years.

Already? You just arrived here. Did you know them before you got here?

[Now that's talent! Get a bunch of people you just met to come to your defense. It was a nice statement about this strange city. He smiles.]

I'm glad you feel safe.

No. He replied to my post like you did and the other people did. People here are really great.

[He smiles back at him.]

I miss my family but this is the first time in awhile I haven't felt like I need to look over my shoulder ever five minutes. I like it.
