[Here we have the Mafia heir in his most unnatural environment. A little Japanese garden with what looked like broken furniture wood (but really, they are slat beds all taken apart) and in the back ground, a few extra fluffy type mattresses. His shirt has the sleeves rolled up so high they almost look like poofy sleeves on a dress and he has at least one nail sticking out from between his lips as he's... sanding wood. With nice muscle structure sanding said wood.]

Anyone know of any decent hardware stores? And some instruction manuals would be brilliant. Never buying from that asshole who said 'some assembly required.' I swear he's a clerk from IKEA.

[Kin has acquired beds! Low to the ground, but probably better than sleeping on the floor. He hadn't expected to put them together himself. Or sanding them to stain the wood, either.]

[Qing waits for a bit, but then carries out a tray with some sweetened fruit water (something Gaura taught her but she's not sure what it's called, it has lemons in it) and a bowl of shelled peanuts. Setting it on the edge of the porch like a shelf, she comes close to take a look at what Kinn is doing.]

Do you need any help?

[So he hadn't expected any refreshment while he worked, but he's very pleased that it arrives. With a friendly nod in greeting and a smile, he answers. ]

Thank you, Khun Wen, but it's not necessary. These are for you in thanks for helping us and it wouldn't be right if you worked on the beds I'm trying to get together.

[She looks at him surprised.]

They're a gift for me?

[She bows to him.]

Thank you, Khun Kinn. I was actually wondering what else would make you and your family more comfortable here. I have some money..

[She glances back at the house and frowns.]

I've never really owned a place like this before. The government here just gave it to me last month and it's been just me staying here. I'm used to not having much.

[ Sitting back on his heels, he looks back at her. ]

Isn't that man of yours good for anything? Looks like he could swing a hammer or something.

[Normally she might take offense of anyone saying something like that about 'her man' but (teehee) Jiang Cheng really is her man now! That thought along changes any negative to a basket of kittens and rainbows! The evidence is clear on her face as she breaks into a bright, but shy smile.

She looks down modestly, but it's far too late to hide it.]

A-Cheng is more knowledgeable about this. He rebuilt his whole sect when it was burned down in a war.

[She gestures toward the porch. She looks at it like it was made of diamonds.]

He hung the swing for me.

[... Oh, she has it bad for that man. He can see why. Wanyin was good looking and seemed as loyal as anyone could be. ]

His sect? You mean home?

[Sometimes deciphering what these ancient people said was confusing.]

Wanyin ever hurts you, I'll shoot him on your behalf.

[At his question, she draws her attention away from Cheng and tries to focus. This has never been a problem before but right now it's a little difficult.

She nods.]

A sect is our clan's homeland. It's a region of buildings and people who the sect leader rules over and protects. The robes he wears are a symbol of which sect he is from.

[The promise surprises her and for a moment she doesn't know what to say to that. She might've expected it from Wuxian, but to hear something so protective from an outsider.. it was flattering.]

He won't, but thank you.

[She smirks.]

He knows what I'm capable of.

[Never piss off the doctor. ]

Like a family. We...kind of operate in the same way.

[ They had a kingdom, at one time, and Kinn was in the process of taking it over from his father. Only there was more war and corruption involved, he thought. ]

Yes, it's a family.

[She smiles, pleased they have this in common. She can use the name family instead of sect or clan if that's what he's more familiar with.]

You have the air of a family leader. You've been honorable in taking care of them.

[Even if the one had stayed only one night and left to stay with their neighbors.]

Will you tell me what else you and your men need to be more comfortable here?

[A pleased smile graces his face as he sits back from his work.]

I don't know if creature comforts would help. We'll be more at ease when Vegas is healed. And finding our own place.

[ Because he wasn't dragging her into their familial problems. ]

It shouldn't be too much longer. Vegas is gaining strength and his vitality is improving. I estimate it to be another couple weeks of rest and he should be well. If he's like most people, though, he could get too eager and overestimate his endurance for a while more.

[ He snorts.]

Young male with no impulse control. What could possibly go wrong?

[She smirks.]

I can always provide more sedatives.

[A little more serious.]

When you do choose to leave, I'll be sure to give you a supply of medicines in case anything happens.

[His wai to her had his fingers just under his nose. ]

I hope we will never have to use them, Khun Wen.

[Her expression softens at his bow. She doesn't know what his life was like back home, but Kinn seemed like a good man- a good family leader- to her. She hopes the gods here bless him. She might even light some incense for him. Back home, she wouldn't bother. Those gods had clearly long since stopped listening to her and her people's cries.]

I do too. What sort of place are you looking for?

An estate.

[ A compound that one can protect easily. ]

I am looking for a place with enough room so that if more of my people arrive, they have a place to stay. With fortifications.

[She frowns uncertain what that means exactly, at least until he clarifies 'with fortifications'. Ah! That, she gets.]

That's wise. I had this place built with a wall for that reason too. It's much easier to ward somewhere that has only one entrance. When you get your place, I'll come hang talismans for you.

Most of the people I know live in the Eastern Kingdom but at the time I didn't want to live so close to them. It's worked out because of my job at Harmony Gardens, but I recommend taking time to consider the location carefully. If you're lucky like I was the government will offer to build you a place to your liking. You'll just have to choose the neighborhood.

[He nods his thanks at the offer. ]

I would appreciate that. I'm not certain I would get that lucky. I think it would be more lucky that the government didn't make me a place.

[ Not unless he was 'emperor.' lol ]

Why is that?

[She frowns at him curiously.]

I was concerned initially that there would be someone to come and demand payment for this place when I was first offered it, but others I know who have been given places like this to live have assured me it's never come so far. Although I'm not naïve enough to think that couldn't change at some point.

[He nods slowly in agreement.]

Do you think they ever keep records of us? Like they would try and figure out who we are, what our previous professions were? Then find a way to exploit that?

[ The second someone comes after them because they were mafia would be the last second they breathed. ]

Perhaps. With the scientists here, they would be only smart to keep some kind of records on us to understand us and yes, exploit us better.

[She's way to paranoid a person to think otherwise.]

However, I believe as long as we're providing what they need then they won't harm us intentionally. Their world depends on us. It's not the most pleasant exchange on either side, but we hold more power here than it may seem.

[Kinn nods solemnly. They are on the same page in the same book.]

So if we aren't compliant little batteries making bonds with people, they may come after us.

[ He's not ~bonding~ with anyone! ]

[She nods.]

It's possible but there's also an energy here that is influencing us to bond with others. It can be a familial bond or a platonic friendship as well. It isn't limited to just sexual ones. From what I understand though, those are the strongest.

[She steps closer and turns around. Lifting her hair, she shows him the scattering of tiny feathers.]

Mine have just begun.

[His eyes widened as he looked. Part of him wants to touch, just to make certain that they're real, that those feathers are actually growing out of her head, but he doesn't.]

Those... because of Wanyin?

[He doesn't recall any family bonds Wen Qing exhibited. ]

[Her expression softens to a smile and she nods.]

Yes, they began to grow right as your family moved in. I have a friendship with Gaura and A-Cheng's siblings, but the timing is undeniable. I don't know what other features I may gain and I don't know what kind of bird this is, but no one ever knows what they'll become here.
