[ The whole situation is a bit overwhelming for him. Going from a very secluded upbringing to the real world had been tough enough and he hadn’t adjusted and now this one is even less familiar to him. ]

It's about degrees of involvement, I suppose. A musician is anyone who plays an instrument, technically. A minstrel is a traveling musician. A bard, however, implies a greater... mm. Depth? To be a bard is to be the keeper of your people's knowledge - there's a lot of overlap with the loremasters, actually - as well as being able to sing and play and compose.

I recently became a student.

[ Before that a patient in an asylum and before that the victim of a satanic cult so not very conversational topics. ]

A student! [ He smiles ] What do you study?

[ He will be polite and ignore that stumble ]

It's just general studies. I missed a lot and I'm trying to catch up.

A good place to start, if you're not sure and want to catch up.

Some folk know early what they want, but I'm fairly sure most people need a while to work things out! Is anything standing out to you yet?

No... not really. It's hard for me to make decisions, I guess...

Nothing wrong with taking one's time to decide! There's no rush, and don't forget, you can always change your mind, later.

My father is somewhat of an unusual case, but he seldom stayed in one specialty once he had exhausted it's potential.

I think very few people would exhaust any subject! But I think as long as you're having fun learning, it's good.
