It's about degrees of involvement, I suppose. A musician is anyone who plays an instrument, technically. A minstrel is a traveling musician. A bard, however, implies a greater... mm. Depth? To be a bard is to be the keeper of your people's knowledge - there's a lot of overlap with the loremasters, actually - as well as being able to sing and play and compose.

My father is somewhat of an unusual case, but he seldom stayed in one specialty once he had exhausted it's potential.

I think very few people would exhaust any subject! But I think as long as you're having fun learning, it's good.
