[He sighs heavily as he messes with the device he was given. He's never been very good with these things. Pushing his hands through his hair, he tries to at least get it recording somehow before giving up and just trying.]

Hey. If anyone out there can hear me I'd like some help finding a way to the a forest of some kind. My sense of smell is really thrown here so I haven't been able to figure out which way is up let alone which way is not city.

[He offers a smile but his eyes, though seeming bright, don't seem to ever focus on the screen before he fumbles with things to try to turn if off.]

Crap. What is the off...?

[He ends the recording completely on accident. But it's also what he wants so...great?]

I don't mean to pry... Is something the matter with your eyes?

[Ah. So he did record and he recorded in what has to be video. He rubs the back of his neck but there's not much use hiding it.]

Just a bit. They don't work anymore. Haven't for about...a hundred years or so.

Would you like help learning how to navigate the device they gave you?

[He'd rather not have to use it at all. But he's not so stubborn in his ways to not admit he needs this just in case. Better to find a way to learn it than to be where he is now. Fumbling and hoping he doesn't mess it up.]

Don't worry. I won't call in the favor unless I really, really, really need it.

[That gets a laugh.]

Alright. I'll hold you to that.

(( He happened to recognize where Silvio was and, within a few minutes was skipping over to the newcomer. He waved and smiled warmly, then announced himself in case his new friend couldn't make out his features. 'Not working' wasn't the same as 'completely blind' so he's not about to assume. ))

Hi~ It's me, Will. I offered to help you with the device.

[It's the voice that catches his attention to let him know he knows him. The guy from the device. But more than that...]

You smell like flowers.

[He can't help but say that right away.]

I hope they're nice flowers.

(( He's too used to his own scent to notice it, even when it changes. ))

[He lets out a soft laugh and nods.]

Yeah. Like a field of flowers. It just surprised me. I've been smelling a lot of people and animals.

(( A playful grin settles on his lips and Will nods to himself. ))

Maybe I'm secretly a sentient fungus.

[Another laugh leaves him. This guy has a great sense of humor. He likes that.]

Well then you smell better than any fungus I've ever met. It'll be fun saying a plant helped me learn how to use this thing.

[He wiggles the device.]

At least I smell good.

(( Will giggles, then looks at the device. ))

There are a couple of ways to communicate with this thing. You can use video like a camera, voice like a phone, or text. Do you have those kinds of communication where you're from?

People do but I've never been able to use them. Imagine using them with your eyes closed. That's a lot of what it's like for me.

[So it's hard for him to figure out what he's managed to do with it. Which is why he's grateful to the flower smelling guy for helping him out.]

So you're not completely blind?

(( He's not trying to pry, just understand so he can find the best way to teach his new friend how to get by with this device. Even if he doesn't use it regularly, it would be good in case there's some emergency. ))

Completely blind. But I can hear and smell really well that I can get by without my eyes. Though smelling things well doesn't help with this and I haven't been able to identify what noises mean what.

[And it's not like he knows what any of these buttons are.]

Ah, I understand.

(( Will nods to himself. He thinks for a second, then gets out his own device. ))

I can definitely help. I'll send you a message with my device so you can hear what an incoming message sounds like, okay? I don't know if there's a text-to-speech function, but if there is, we'll find it together.

[Holding his device, he tilts his head so he can properly hear what the noise is meant to be.]

This is a voice message.

(( Said both to Silvio and into his own device as the test message. Once Silvio's device makes the sound to indicate there's a message, Will reaches over to guide his hand to the right button to play it back. ))

This button is how you'll access your message.

[Okay. That's what it sounds like. Accepting the guidance, he feels around the right button to better help him figure out how it feels before pushing it. And he's grateful there's another noise that's slightly different to indicate he did it right.]

That's not too hard.

So, basically this part is a keypad. (( He guides Silvio's hand to the bulk of the keys on the device. )) And you use these buttons on the sides to retrieve and send messaged.

[He nods as he keeps feeling to understand the buttons.]

I don't know that I'll use the keyboard that much since well...

[The obvious blindness.]

There must be a voice-to-text feature...

(( He's poking around at his own device to try to find it. ))

Well, there is a basic voice function so it would be like making a call or leaving a voicemail. But it would be nice to figure it out in case someone sends a text message to you directly or over the network.

Voice-to-text... So it makes the words I say? Would it be able to read the text to me too if we figure that out?

[So far being able to call is a good start. At least he can listen to that. But he does tilt his head more as he listens to the noises on Will's device to figure out if he can hear one that seems different and hasn't been explored yet. Though wait...

He holds out his device to Will.]

Here. Try looking on mine. Maybe it's easier to find on mine because it was given to me specifically and I'd need it.

Oh! That's a good idea!

(( Will smiles even though he knows it won't be seen and tucks his own device away to look at Silvio's. And right there it is! One voice-to-text button and one text-to-voice button, which is probably the more valuable of the two. ))

Here it is! There's one for text-to-voice here... (( He guides Silvio's hand to the button. It's above the keypad but oblong and larger than those buttons. ))

And on the other side here is voice-to-text in case you want to send someone a text message instead of a voice message.
