It's a tradition where I come from that a handsome young man should be the first guest through your door on New Year's Day for good luck in the coming year. There were several people he didn't have a chance to introduce himself to at the Christmas party he and his friend Riley hosted. Once again he's reminded that most of the people in his and Gaura's social circle are incredibly attractive and this won't be a hard task. ))

Traditionally, they bring a gift as well, but since I'm soliciting someone for the task, I feel like it would be silly to demand that of them, too.

It's a very common belief among the people where I live. We also throw a cake at the door on New Year's Day to signify a year of abundance.

Yes. Actually his fiancé. It only just happened last night. I came with Kinn to your Christmas party but I'm not certain we were introduced. It was a little hectic and everything. I haven't been here very long.

[He offered the last as a sort of rueful apology for not showing proper manner by greeting one's hosts at a party.]

Well how about you have both! I'll be happy to bring you and Er-ge a gift! Maybe it will still be lucky if I'm one of the first visitors, even if I'm not the first?

[He laughs with surprise at the next tradition.]

You throw cake at the door?! Do you do that just to your door or do you go to other people's houses and throw cake at theirs too?

Just our door. Where I come from, we do this to show that we have enough to be wasteful. It's sort of a pagan, sympathetic magic wish for an abundant year ahead without want.

Does the cake have to be ruined or can it be used for anything else, like feeding an animal, after you throw it?

Da-ge, I hope the gods listen and give you and Er-ge an abundant and lucky year.

Oh, I don't think that much of a sugary confection would be good for an animal. The point is to waste it. Feeding it to something would defeat that purpose.
