It's a tradition where I come from that a handsome young man should be the first guest through your door on New Year's Day for good luck in the coming year. Does the cake have to be ruined or can it be used for anything else, like feeding an animal, after you throw it?

Oh, I don't think that much of a sugary confection would be good for an animal. The point is to waste it. Feeding it to something would defeat that purpose.
